PREMIERE IN HAU - "Best Beast" by Gui Garrido
05.01.2012

My love is building a building

ee cummings

In the first group play by young Portuguese choreographer Gui Garrido, the meaning of group is disputed as a concept of architecture. From pyramids to chains, from fortresses to clumps,  “Best Beast” is a creature under construction. It moves together, it breathes together, it sings and shouts together. It is a creature of belonging together to a same mechanism, it is a creature of making the “humanity creature” move forward, despite effort, subjectivity and accident.

“Best Beast” is a feast. Yet, we cannot tell about the secret pleasures of this group of performers in presenting us this travel throught human Tetris, singing and spitting. As we foretell their lucidity (and even some irony) in passing from one construction to the other, they foretell our embarassment in witnessing these “structures on nothing”, where we fell at the same time included and excluded.

The several attemps of building something common, from plane to bulky, lead us to think about the exhaustion of contemporary social architecture. Not as form-less nihilistic building,  but as a form-full  desire to activate emotional layers within the group, even without really knowing where to aim.

One could ask: “What do we have in common? When was the last time they changed or do something together? Where are they going?”. The travel that this beast is proposing is already an answer.
